The Chamber Staff extends a cordial invitation to join in celebrating the grand opening ceremony of Roseville Housing Trust.

Dating back to the 1960s, the Alpha Tau Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® has been a staunch advocate for the elderly. For over 40 years, the Roseville Apartment Complex has stood as a testament to the chapter’s dedication to serving and honoring senior citizens in the San Antonio community. The initial efforts began with the establishment of the Eastside Senior Citizen’s Center, funded by a grant from the Economic Opportunities Development Corporation of San Antonio. Located at 715 South Rosary, the Center provided a variety of social services to individuals aged 60 and above, whose income fell within the poverty index at the time.

The Roseville Apartments emerged as a natural extension of Alpha Tau Omega’s commitment and experience in working with seniors. The concept for the apartment community was proposed to the Alpha Tau Omega Chapter on November 6, 1966, notably predating the establishment of the Fair Housing Act (FHA) by the U.S. Congress in 1968. This highlights Alpha Tau Omega’s forward-thinking leadership in advocating for equitable housing for minorities in San Antonio. The chapter members overwhelmingly supported the idea, forming a committee to plan and execute the project. The committee operated until July 1, 1970, when the Roseville Housing Trust of San Antonio was officially formed.

In 1968, the U.S. Congress passed the Fair Housing Act (FHA), prohibiting racial discrimination in both public and private housing. Concurrently, the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) began providing financial support for low-income housing construction. This legislation paved the way for Alpha Tau Omega’s vision to become a reality. Chapter members met with the local FHA office in 1969 to advocate for the construction of the Roseville Apartments at its current location. A grant application was prepared and submitted to HUD, resulting in a loan approval of over $1,000,000 on May 3, 1970, to construct the 88-unit senior citizen community (80 one-bedroom and 8 two-bedroom units). The groundbreaking ceremony took place on January 14, 1971, and the first residents moved in during the fall of that year.

We would be delighted if you would attend and celebrate Roseville Housing Trust with The Greater San Antonio Chamber family!
